Interaction with nature

In order to create a balance between population and nature, the new law for Galapagos Islands is trying to be the instrument to build a new order where wild life and human society have equal rights. 200 people were involved in the revision of the law on June 24 of this year. Everybody understands the importance of the natural and special ecosystem where we live. However, different groups with particular interests feel that the new law is against their human rights and needs and that the rights of nature are stronger than their rights.

To create a balance is a difficult task and to recuperate the damage from years of exploitation is hardest, if not impossible. Wildlife is being threatened to it's limit and many people don´t understand this because the rules and the laws don´t connect nature and society, and I think this is the real problem.

How is it possible to understand what is happening with the environment or how is it possible to love our paradise if we don´t have contact with it? A small percent of permanent residents have seen a cormorant face to face, a small percent have seen an active volcano, etc. and yet we live here in the islands. Why is it not possible for us to be in contact with nature, or to have a real experience with nature?

We only have pictures, videos, rules, laws, penalties and sanctions and if we can´t create a sustainable balance, it could mean our extinction, too.

Senior citizen

Dagfin Cobos Guldberg is the name of my grandfather. He is married with Pastora Córdova, my grandmother. He is 81 years old. I can remember when would I hug his fat belly, he looked like a Buddha, but now he is thin but strong, considering his age. All my life I hated milk and when I used to visit the house of my grandparents, he picked on me for not drinking milk. I didn´t want to drink it, but he would always follow me with a glass of milk. During Christmas after dinner, he told us a lot of fantastic stories about devils, hauntings and ghosts. My brother, my cousins and all the children there was so scared, but also excited. Once, he told us about an enormous octopus in Lobería beach and I couldn`t believe it. Now I know that it could have been true. All his life, he was in the high land growing coffee and sugar and bringing up pigs and cows. He told me that when he was young, life in Port Baquerizo Moreno was very different and a few people lived in the port. People went to the port only for vacations and to swim in the beach.

DAP statistical difference

Recently, field test of our study project about trees, show that, the difference are statistically significant between trees in low level and high levels in one area. Our study was focused on Tijeretas Hill. The mean of the diameter at breast height in the group#1, in the low level was 17,4 and 29,9 in the group#2, in the high level. Our observations included an arid zone in the group#1 with trees growing between the rocks and a cover of ground with a few centimeters height in the group#2. We can conclude that different geographic characteristics could favor a better access to the resources of sun, water and nutrients. Other characteristics could be changes in temperature and humidity.

Is broken the Alpha male success

In traditional scientific evidence, tend to focus on male domination, by interactions of competition for mating. Mating success of males was measured in the number and sequence of copulation, highly correlated with aggressive behavior of males against potential rivals (Farentino, 1972b) Males more aggressive "alpha" copulated first and more frequently with females during mating events. Subordinate males were individuals who were faced with the alpha and were pursued by him. These aggressive interactions were a little among subordinates. Natural selection should favor females who choose to alpha males, because these women tend to produce babies genetically adapted to the maximum, but, despite a large literature tends to support male dominance in the selection of couples for reproduction (Wilson, 1975), field tests with mammals and recent laboratory studies suggest that female choice is broader than previously thought (Ralls, 1977) women having a greater number and sequences of mating with subordinate males, perhaps because women must determine that the man who played the role of alpha, really has genuine characteristics.
Would be very interesting, break the traditional theory of Alpha male success, if we study this female behavior, in sea lions of Galapagos Islands.

Sheanovi restaurant

Centrally located, on José de Villamil and Ignacio de Hernández streets, Sheanovi restaurant offers local, national and international meals, but if you prefer something different for a special day, you can talk with Joan, the boss, for other options.  Sheanovi has a small space, but they provide good service. The restaurant's atmosphere is friendly and comfortable. The place is decorated with special details.  The experience is unique and charming.  It is the best place to enjoy exquisite moments with your partner, your family or your friends. They told me that the name of the restaurant was the old name of the bay in Baquerizo Moreno Port-San Cristobal Island.

Adaptation

On 2011-mar-11 the news of the world said something about an earthquake in Japan that created a big tsunami and it could arrive to the Galapagos Islands. This day everybody was scared and early in the morning all the people climbed to high land.  That day I could see sadness in many faces behind my digital camera, but is very interesting to look the adaptation of the people to different situations. Two days after, all this changed. We had forgotten the tsunami and in the Baquerizo Moreno port my brother, my wife, Alex (our friend) and me were enjoying the waves one more time.
